All patterns are now posted to Ravelry!
As the chair of the Norwegian department at St. Olaf College and a knitting enthusiast, I thought it appropriate to commemorate St. Olaf’s 150th anniversary in the way that many noteworthy events are celebrated in Norway, by designing a knitting pattern–which evolved into multiple patterns.
All the patterns feature St. Olaf colors, Norwegian knitting techniques using a popular Norwegian yarn, Rauma. The patterns will be available for purchase on ravelry.com. The yarn and other materials are available at Northfield Yarn. Look for their knit-along and finishing party after the new year.
The St. Olaf College Magazine featured the patterns in an article in the fall 2024 edition that you can read here.
Join me in commemorating our tight-knit community (pun intended!)!

Sesqui Cowl

The first of the St. Olaf College sesqui patterns to be released is the sesqui cowl the end of November. This design features 150 interconnected Os with a hill formation in the background.
This pattern is now available for purchase on Ravelry and is soon available in person at Northfield Yarn.
Sesqui Holiday Ornament & Gift Card Holder

The second of the St. Olaf College sesqui patterns to be released is the holiday ornament and gift card holder. The holiday ornament and gift card holder use the same pattern with different sized needles.
This pattern is now available for purchase on Ravelry and will soon be available for purchase in person at Northfield Yarn.
Sesqui Thumbless Baby Mitts (Goldie)

The third of the St. Olaf College sesqui patterns is the Gullet (Goldie) which are two thumbless baby mitts, shield and O.
Directions are given for newborn, 6 mo., 9 mo., and 12 mo. with either short cuff or long, folded over cuff. Because there are no thumbs, this pattern does not distinguish between left and right hand.

All sizes of the mitten– baby, child, and adult– are symbolically designed. As with the other sizes, the ribbing on each mitten creates 12 ribs, or pillars to commemorate our twelve college presidents.
This pattern is now available for purchase on Ravelry and will soon be available for purchase in person at Northfield Yarn
Sesqui mittens- adult bundle
The sesqui mitten adult bundle includes 4 sizes of 3 designs, both left and right hands for a total of 12 pattern diagrams.
The designs feature the St. Olaf shield, the sesquicentennial 150 logo and one inspired by the beams in Boe chapel. Each has customizable elements to showcase one’s unique St. Olaf experience and connection for students, faculty and staff (including your graduation year, year of retirement, office, areas of study, etc.).
All of the adult mittens use Rauma Vams or double stranded Finull which result in a thick mitten designed for Minnesota winters.

The St. Olaf College Sesqui mittens- child bundle

The child bundle features 5 sizes of mitten patterns: the St. Olaf shield, the sesquicentennial 150 logo (only in the two largest sizes) and one inspired by the beams in Boe chapel.
All of the children’s sizes are knitted in Rauma Finull.
This pattern bundle is only available for purchase on ravelry.

My hope is that this unique commemorative project will connect the many individuals who share my enthusiasm in fiber arts. If you knit any of these and post to social media, please use the hashtag #stolafsesquiknitting
