4.00-5.00pm What do you know about the man with the shiny nose?
What do you know about the founder of our college whose bust in Old Main has a very shiny nose? What were his intentions for establishing our institution? Why is there little mention of him on campus 150 years after its founding?
Join Professor Kari Lie Dorer from the Norwegian department for an interactive quiz filled with uffdas and um yah yahs. Prizes will be given to both the best score and randomly to those who participate.
This event is geared towards students, staff and faculty, but is open to the public.
After the quiz, all are welcome to celebrate the publication of Muus vs. Muus: The Scandal that Shook Norwegian-America.

Professor Kari Lie Dorer from the Norwegian Department at St. Olaf College will be discussing findings from her recent publication, Muus vs. Muus: The Scandal That Shook Norwegian-America. Centered on the tumultuous and very public marital scandal of Bernt Julius and Oline Muus, it closely examines religious communities, gender dynamics, and structures of power in the Norwegian-American immigrant community. It seeks to find an answer to how Norwegians wrestled with new landscapes, new traditions and systems, and new expectations in America.
Over lunch, you are invited to watch a visual presentation highlighting a number of the original newspaper articles from the 1880s regarding the case. These newspaper articles are sharp, divisive, and reveal a fury of intense reactions to the church and legal proceedings.
Muus vs. Muus is co-published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press and the Norwegian-American Historical Association.
